The Walk

During March 2009, the north shore section of the Lakeside Way was opened to the public , thereby completing the 27 mile trail that circumnavigates the giant man made lake of Kielder Water. The Lakeside Way is a multi-user trail, suitable for walker, cyclists, horse riders, pushchair and wheelchair users.
I took on the task on walking the entire route in one day and giving the dog a good work out in the process. The trail is well prepared and relatively flat and so it was fairly easy to complete in about 10 hours and 30 minutes with breaks. There are car parks at numerous places. Some are pay and display and some are free. Refreshment facilities are located at Kielder Village, Leaplish Water Park and Tower Knowe Visitors Centre. Further toilet facilities are located at Hawkhope car park and Matthews Linn.

There are many stop off point of interest on the trail. Some provide an insight to life before the lake was formed, with many road disappearing into the water. There are many art installations, some of which are interactive and of real interest.

There is no plan for this walk as it is a prepared trail and easy to follow. Be aware that mobile phone coverage is limited in the area and so plan you walk well.
