Northumbrian Walks

Welcome

I have produced this Web site to share in my passion for this most beautiful, rugged and wild county of Northumberland, in particular walks in Northumberland.

Although few in number at this time, I'd like to share some of my favourite walks with you. Many of these walks are well visited and are found on the normal tourist routes, but some are off the beaten track and make for a great day out.

The site is free to use. I only provide an overview of the walks, giving you a flavour of what to expect. There are no detailed maps, but I provide descriptions of the routes, terrain, distances, elevation and accessibly.

New walks will be added all of the time. Please visit the site regularly to view my updates.

Ordinance Survey Maps

A map is essentially a safety item and essential for many of these walks. Northumberland is remote with many of the areas unreachable by mobile. I've provided track diagrams produced from my handheld GPS which I then add detail later. These are for illustrative purposes only and should not be used as a definitive route map.

I've provided details of suitable OS maps for each walk. I recommend the "Explorer" range maps for walkers. At 4 cm to 1 Km (2.5 inches to 1 mile), these maps provide much better footpath detail than the usual "Landranger" range (2 cm to 1Km or 1.25 inches to 1 mile). The "explorer" range are often double sided, which can be a pain, but the extra detail is worth it.

Shopping with Amazon

Although this site is free to use, it is not free to run. You are able to contribute to the running costs by buying maps, books, etc through Amazon. I do not sell products directly through this site, you will deal directly with Amazon, who will take payment, handle shipping and after sales service. At this stage I can cater for UK users via Amazon.co.uk and US users through Amazon.com. I'm looking to extend this to other European countries as well. I've built specific local interest stores at Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.
